Learn to assess and reduce risk levels in electronic and electrical safety systems based on ISO 13849 / IEC 61508.

Functional Safety is part of the overall safety of a system or process and involves the definition of, and requirements for, safety functions to reach an acceptable level of risk. This course provides an overview of Functional Safety standards and how they should be interpreted and used, as well as examples of methods for assessing and reducing risk levels. This includes important concepts such as PL(Performance Level) and SIL (Safety Integrity Level).

The course is based on ISO 13849, but when required refers to IEC 61508, (Functional Safety for electrical, electronic or electronically programmable systems), and related standards in areas such as Robotics, Industrial equipment, AGV and Safety controls/products.

From the program

  • The purpose of functional safety
  • Theory and concepts of Functional Safety
  • Functional Safety design principles
  • Risk analyses and Risk mitigation
  • Reliability and Maintainability
  • Parameters of Performance Level (PL)
  • Safety Integrity Level (SIL) vs Performance Level (PL)
  • Implementation and verification
  • Standards framework

Course objectives

After the course, you should have increased knowledge of what Functional Safety means and be familiar with requirements and guidelines on safety functions for products and systems in different industries.

Target audience

The training is aimed at those who work with or plan to work with systems where compliance with a Functional Safety standard is required. It is suitable for everyone involved in line/project, requirements, development, construction, verification, or quality.
