The requirements change as soon as any form of radio transmitter is installed!
Nowadays, wireless communication is being integrated into an increasing number of products. Home alarms, electronic locks, doorbells, toys, switches, control systems, gate openers, car alarms, washing machines, and more traditional communication radios are just a few examples of product categories that often include some type of radio transmitter.
When wireless communication is integrated into an existing product, the requirements that the final product must meet change accordingly.
The requirements for different types of wireless communication/radio transmitters also vary from country to country. In the EU, the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) governs these requirements. RED covers all radio communication equipment intended for placement on the European market, with a few exceptions. To CE mark your product under this directive—that is, to sell your product within the EU—the product must meet the essential requirements listed in Article 3 of RED. This directive, introduced in 2016, includes several major and minor changes compared to the previous R&TTE directive. These changes affect how manufacturers and importers of products containing radio components can place their products on the European market. Make sure you understand now how this impacts you and your products.
Other important markets, such as the USA and Canada, have their own standards and requirements for wireless communication/radio transmitters, and these do not always align with those in the EU. Many manufacturers also aim to reach these markets and thus need to be aware of the differences and similarities in the regulatory requirements for the implemented radio technology.
With the right knowledge of the regulatory framework, you gain an advantage over your competitors. You can bring your products to market faster and at lower cost by avoiding expensive redesigns and retesting.
This training provides an overview of the requirements placed on you as a manufacturer or importer of products containing wireless communication. We highlight important technical decisions you should consider when designing a product intended for sale across multiple markets that includes wireless communication. However, the course primarily focuses on European and North American requirements.
From the program
- RED requirements
- Cybersecurity
- Important technical choices in wireless communication that affect market access
- Product testing for RED
- Testing and certification of wireless communication for North America
- Brief overview of requirements from other key export markets
Course Objective
The goal of this training is to provide a fundamental overview as well as knowledge of how the introduction of RED impacts products already on the market.
Who Should Attend?
This course is intended for those working with products containing wireless communication/radio transmitters. It is also suitable for anyone considering developing or upgrading an existing product with some form of wireless communication, and who wants to understand how CE marking requirements and export regulations outside Europe are changing. Participants may include designers, product managers, quality managers, importers, purchasers, or similar roles.
Prerequisites
No prior knowledge is required.
Wireless communication in this context includes, for example: Bluetooth, WLAN, ZigBee, GPS, GSM, 3G, 4G.
