All manufacturers and system integrators who place or bring machinery onto the European market must systematically assess risks in accordance with EN ISO 12100. The risk assessment and risk reduction process is the core of compliance with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and the forthcoming Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230.
If failed to conduct a proper risk assessment—or cannot demonstrate it—the consequences can be serious: machine incidents, non-compliance findings, market recalls or refusal, and product liability claims.
This half-day training gives you a solid foundation in the structured risk assessment method demanded by the standards, as well as practical tools to apply in your machinery design, integration or verification process.
From the Programme
Participants will follow the entire EN ISO 12100 process through theory and real examples, including:
- Legal background: Why risk assessment is required
- Structure and role of harmonised standards
- Preparation - forming the right team and collecting information
- Step-by-step risk assessment according to EN ISO 12100
- Risk reduction hierarchy
- Link to control system design
- Verification and validation of implemented safety measures
Course Objectives
The course provides participants with a clear understanding of how to perform and document risk assessments according to EN ISO 12100. It focuses on identifying hazards, estimating and evaluating risks, and selecting effective risk-reduction measures that align with EU machinery directive. Participants will learn how to integrate risk assessment results into design and CE-marking documentation, recognise common pitfalls, and apply the standard practically to achieve safer and compliant machinery.
Who Is the Course Aimed At?
This training is designed for professionals who are (or should be) involved in the risk assessment chain for machinery and mechanical systems. Typical target groups include:
- Design, process, automation and safety engineers,
- Project managers and system integrators working on machine manufacture or modification,
- Procurement, quality & safety management staff who need to understand how risk assessment fits into the compliance and certification process,
- Maintenance engineers and machinery assessors seeking to refresh or deepen their understanding of EN ISO 12100 in practice.
Previous Knowledge
No prior specialist knowledge of EN ISO 12100 is required—this is an introductory to intermediate level course. However, a general understanding of the Machinery Directive, CE-marking principles or basic machinery safety concepts is beneficial.
